Machame Route with Dik-Dik team

Day 1 : beginning of the climb, night at Machame Hut 1800-2990m

After breakfast in your hotel, a jeep will bring you to the entrance of Kilimanjaro Park, at Machame, where you will be met by your guide and porters. This first day of walk will take you through a magnificent forest for about 3 to 4 hours.

Day 2 : Shira Hut 2990-3880m

Today, the real climb starts as you reach the top of the forest. Then starts the impressive moorland with its giant heath, as you head towards Shira Hut. Around 5 hours of walk.

Day 3 : Barranco Hut 3880-4500-3900m

Today, it is up and down again, during 5-6 hours, and you sleep at about the same altitude.

Day 4 : Karanga 3900-4000m

Today it is another 5 hours walk, with an afternoon to rest, or to hike around.

Day 5 : Barafu Hut 4000- 4600m

Today, the ascension is really quite steep, through beautiful sceneries, and you are walking a little slower, du to the altitude. The hike takes 3 to 5 hours, and you need to go to bed early, as tomorrow is the final climb!

Day 6 : Uhuru Peak and Mweka Hut 4600-5895-2835m

Departure at one in the morning! After a 7 to 8 hours hike, you finally reach the highest point in Africa, Uhuru Peak. If you are lucky, you will see the sunrise over the surrounding african plains, and on a clear day, Mount Meru and Mount Kenya! Then it is a long descent towards Mweka Hut, but much easier than the climb!

Uhuru means freedom in Swahili, and the name was given by Julius Nyerere, Tanzania's first president!

Day 7: Back to your hotel

After a 5 hours walk, you reach the gate and are picked up by a car, that brings you back to your hotel, where you might enjoy a jump in the pool, and then a real bed!
