Selous Game Reserve After a 45 minutes flight from Dar-Es-Salam, you arrive in the Selous Game Reserve, one of the biggest protected wilderness area in Africa and even in the world. You will have a unique experience, staying at the wonderful Sand Rivers Camp, a haven of natural luxury, set on a rocky peninsular overlooking a sweep of the Rufiji River. The cottages are constructed from local wood and stone, each open-fronted with view on the river and with comfortable ensuite bathrooms. You will feel like privileged guests of Tanzania, sipping a cocktail on the verandah overlooking the river, listening to the birds and the hippos, waiting for the delicious dinner to be served...
The
options there are numerous with game drives in open jeeps, walking safaris with
armed guides, boat trips on the river, fishing, and especially flycamping, an
experience not to be missed, where you will sleep under the stars (and the big
mosquito net!) and get a real feeling for deep, ancient Africa!
Ruaha After 4 days in the Selous, you'll fly to Ruaha National Park. Its very remoteness is probably its greatest charm. As the plane approaches the landing strip, the pilot must make several turns above it, in order to chase the zebras, gazelles and buffalos that have found a nice grazing spot! It remains Africa of the imagination with very few tourists and even fewer cars! There you will stay in Mdonya Upper Camp, in big safari tents with open-sky ensuite bathrooms.
In the morning already, while you are having breakfast, the buffalos come grazing not too far and at night, a guard accompanies you back to your tent, to avoid any unpleasant encounter. The camp is simple, but nicely made and the staff very friendly. In the day, you will go on safari in the open jeeps and enjoy the big elephant population as well as the numerous giraffes. The lanscape is very different to that of the Selous, with rolling hills, many sand rivers, and the huge baobabs!
Luxury in Pemba After more than a week in the wild, you will appreciate swimming in the Indian Ocean and having nothing to do but to relax. Fundu Lagoon is the perfect place for it. Situated on Pemba, the clove island, this "bare foot paradise" is made of natural materials, and located amidst green forest. Here you will get the best service from a friendly and relaxed team, making you share their dream of Robinson Crusoe with you!
Extra care is taken for food, and drinks served in the deck bar at sunset, highly recommended. If you wish to dive, snorkel, go looking for coconut crabs, or hope for baby turtles hatching, you will be taken to Misali Island, a marine park, with a pristine beach and turquoise water. This is the spot! |
